A BRIT couple have told how they became permanent cave dwellers after buying a holiday home carved out of a giant rock.

Lisa and Tony Evans ditched Wales‘ rugged coastline to live in a grotto in the Spanish city of Granada.

They purchased the unusual pad in 2016 after years of holidaying in southern Spain led them to decide to put roots down in the region.

The pair’s three-bedroom rock pad only cost them a reasonable £40,000, including the cost of refurbishments.

Former civil police worker Lisa, 55, and her husband Tony frequently flew out to their cave to bask in the Spanish sunshine.

But four years later, the pair decided to make the move abroad for good.

The couple took the plunge and left their lives behind in Newport, Wales, for their cosy cave in the hills overlooking Granada.

They have fallen in love with their Flinstone-like cave and vowed never to return to the UK.

Lisa and Tony have been so enthralled with their new lifestyle that they decided to snap up a second cave to renovate.

They splashed out on another rocking retreat, similar to their home etched out of rock, and have grand plans for it.

The pair spent £25,000 (€29,000) on their second cavern to give themselves more space as they reside in the sunny region.

Lisa says she and her husband expect to fork out at least another £60,000 (€70,000) transforming the place into their perfect pad.

She told iNews: “When the new place is finished it will have more rooms and could be worth about €150,000 (£129,000).”

The Brit hopes the purchase will prove a solid investment.

“Apart from seeing family, we don’t go back to Britain. We like our life so much here. This is real Spain,” she said.

“Not many people speak English here and the expat community is not very big.”

Despite being an unorthodox place to live, caves have become hot properties for people looking for a different way of life.

They can be rigged out with modern amenities while buyers can make the most of the authentic elements.

Cave dwellers can also save some cash – as they are cool in summer and warm in winter, with the temperature typically only varying between 16C and 22C.

A growing number of Brits, looking for a cheap yet interesting alternative to usual homes, are now inhabiting rocks in Spain.

We previously told how a couple dubbed the “Welsh Flinstones” boast eight caves in their property portfolio.

Paula and Spence spent £17,000 buying the derelict holes, and after years of work, turned them into their dream rustic home.

And this former businessman quit his job and transformed an 800-year-old cave into a spectacular home after being diagnosed with MS.

Angelo Mastropietro braved all the odds to turn the abandoned cave into a stunning pad – dubbed The Rockhouse Retreat.
