Students and alumni are trying to raise £10,000 for a bronze statue to honour a very tall duck which is presumed dead.
Long Boi, who lived on the University of York’s campus, has not been seen in more than two months – forcing officials to confirm the worst last week.
The plucky bird turned into a ‘mascot’ after becoming an internet sensation four years ago, and had a list of celebrity fans including radio DJ Greg James and talk show host James Corden.
Now the president of the university’s student union, Pierrick Roger, called on his supporters to fund the timeless statue.
He wrote: ‘For many, Long Boi was much more than just a very long duck or just another university mascot.
‘His 2’4″ brought a smile to all of us, allowing us to see that it was okay to be a bit different, and for that, we miss him already.
‘We want to commission and install a to-scale memorial of our cherished Boi for all to enjoy.’
At the time of publication the campaign had raised almost £3,000 on a fundraising page.
The bird first went viral in 2019 after social media users on Reddit branded him the ‘tallest mallard to have ever lived’.

But on May 11 this year, officials from the University of York said they believed Long Boi had died after two months without any sightings of him.
This led to many current and former students feeling ‘a duck-shaped hole in their heart’ over the disappearance of the iconic bird.
Recent graduate Victoria Edwards told Metro.co.uk: ‘He was the reason I chose the University of York, my reason for waking up in the mornings.
‘No one can fill the duck-shaped hole in my heart.’
Jack, a former history student at the university, told Metro.co.uk: ‘Long Boi had energised me with a passion for living to strive towards a worthwhile existence.’
